Tom Hiddleston has been accused of portraying himself as a “white saviour” after sharing a story of his humanitarian work with the UN during his Golden Globes speech.
The Night Manager star won best actor in a mini-series or TV motion picture for his role as Jonathan Pine in the John Le Carre adaptation.
After thanking the acclaimed novelist and his co-stars, the actor shared a story of his experience of humanitarian work in South Sudan.

The 35-year-old, who has been volunteering with the United Nations Children’s Fund since 2013, met a group of medics from Medecins Sans Frontieres in the east African country last year.
“They wanted to say hello,” he told the Golden Globes audience. “Because during the shelling, in the previous month, they had binge-watched the Night Manager.
“The idea that I could, or that we could provide, some relief and entertainment for people… who are fixing the world in the places where it was broken made me immensely proud.”

The story sparked a backlash on social media, with viewers accusing the actor of having a “white saviour complex”.
“I see T-Hiddle’s white saviour complex is still alive and well,” posted one Twitter user.
Another wrote: “Excellent job Tom Hiddleston, in your role as The White Saviour.”
